Film series: Studio Ghibli Sundays

Studio Ghibli has produced some of the most beloved animated features of all time. This spring, Cornell Cinema warmly invites you to explore the remarkable world of Studio Ghibli with a new film every Sunday afternoon.

Founded in Tokyo in 1985 by directors Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata and producer Toshio Suzuki, Studio Ghibli quickly achieved critical and popular acclaim for the artistry of its animation and the emotional complexity of its storytelling. The name “Ghibli”—which comes from an Arabic word for the hot desert wind that blows off the Sahara—was chosen to reflect the creators’ desire to create a “whirlwind” within the Japanese animation world. At the heart of their work is an interest in original, high-quality, realistic animation that expresses the complexity of the human experience.

While Miyazaki has remained its most prominent figure, Studio Ghibli has continued to expand its team of artists over time and to experiment widely with the animation styles and technologies. This series reflects this dynamic range of creative contributors by featuring films directed by Isao Takahata, Yoshifumi Kondô, Tomomi Mochizuki, and Hiromasa Yonebayashi alongside iconic Miyazaki films like My Neighbor Totoro and Spirited Away.

Though they initially focused on reaching audiences across Asia, in the mid-1990s, Studio Ghibli began working with Disney to bring Studio Ghibli films to United States audiences. One result was the production of English-language dubbed versions of many Studio Ghibli films, which feature voiceovers by popular American actors. These English-dubbed versions will be presented in this series.

Though Studio Ghibli temporarily suspended production in 2014 following Hayao Miyazaki’s retirement, in 2017, the studio announced plans for a new Miyazaki film, How Do You Live. The film is scheduled to be released in July 2023 and will (hopefully) screen at Cornell Cinema next fall.
