Oscar Nominees and Dance Highlight Start of February

The OSCAR SHORTS: DOCUMENTARY films screen one night only, tomorrow, at 6:30pm! Come check out these amazing short documentaries, and while you're there, fill out a ballot with your guess for which title will win an Oscar on Sunday! If you pick the winner, you'll be entered to win some fabulous prizes!

On Wednesday we screen SYNONYMS, a new Contemporary World Cinema film, about a young Israeli who moves to Paris hoping to escape his identity, only to have that identity define him in his new environment. There will be a post-screening discussion led by Professor Laurent Dubreuil, Director of French Studies.

Our Garden Cinema series continues Thursday with THE GARDEN, a documentary about the plight of a 14-acre community garden in South Central Los Angeles as its members face eviction in 2004. Later that night, we're screening HARRIET, featuring Cynthia Erivo's (pictured) Oscar-nominated role as Harriet Tubman. HARRIET is directed by Kasi Lemmons, who directed the criminally under-seen film EVE'S BAYOU, so run, don't walk to catch this one, folks!

We celebrate the recent centennial of Merce Cunningham’s birth (in 2019) this weekend with screenings of the  documentary IF THE DANCER DANCES. Friday night's screening will feature an introduction by choreographer & dance faculty Jumay Chu (PMA). The film is a backstage chronicle of a remounting of RainForest by Stephen Petronio's company. Chu recently recalled that it was seeing one of Cunningham's dances in 1970 that made her decide to become a dancer, and RainForest, in particular, is one of her favorite Cunningham pieces, so don't miss this!

The Academy Awards ceremony takes place Sunday, and we're screening the multi-nominated JOJO RABBIT on Friday and Saturday! Is the world ready to give an Oscar to a comedy about a young boy whose imaginary friend is Adolf Hitler? Check out the film and decide for yourself!

Looking forward, Monday, Feb 10 at 6:45, we show the now iconic road trip film Easy Rider (1969), nominated for Original Screenplay and  featuring Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda & an Oscar-nominated Jack Nicholson.

Hot Tip:
Did you know you can skip the Box Office line?? It's true! And you don't need our All-Access Pass to do it (but hey, free movies for one low price ain't a bad thing either!)—we offer advance tickets online at CornellCinemaTickets.com for the exact same price as in person, no fees! If you plan on coming to one of our screenings, buy a ticket online, and either print out your confirmation or put it on your phone. Then just walk straight to our usher and they'll scan your ticket!  Easy.
