Film series: Three by Yorgos Lanthimos
Yorgos Lanthimos is a celebrated director, screenwriter, and producer from Greece. Lanthimos first gained international acclaimed with his second feature film Dogtooth (2009), which won the Un Certain Regard Prize at the Cannes International Film Festival and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Born in Athens in 1973, Lanthimos studied film and television at the Stavrakos Film School in Athens and had a successful career in commercial film, dance videos, photography, and theater before turning his attention to feature films. Following the critical success of Dogtooth, he went on to receive Academy Award nominations for The Lobster (2015), a dystopian dark comedy where single people must find a romantic partner or be turned into animal (starring Colin Farrell and Rachel Weisz); The Killing of a Sacred Deer (2017), a disturbing thriller about a couple (Colin Farrell and Nicole Kidman) whose life begins to fall apart when they welcome a mysterious teenage boy (Barry Keoghan) into their home; and The Favourite (2018), a lesbian period drama starring Olivia Coleman, Emma Stone, and Rachel Weisz.
Across his body of work, Lanthimos has become known for intense, psychological dramas that explore the darker corners of the human condition. His work is also characterized by distinctive set and costume designs, a flirtation with the horror genre, and an inventive filmmaking style that complicates our understanding of the distinctive worlds his characters inhabit.
This spring, Cornell Cinema invites you to revisit Lanthimos’s work in conjunction with the release of Poor Things (2023), starring Willem Dafoe and Emma Stone, which is nominated for 11 Academy Awards.
