Cine con Cultura is Ithaca’s annual Latin American Film Festival and takes place during Latinx Heritage Month (September 15 – October 15, 2024). The festival is organized in collaboration with Cultura Ithaca!, Ithaca College, and the Department of Romance Studies at Cornell. Screenings are presented at Cinemapolis, Ithaca College, and Cornell Cinema.

This year’s line-up at Cornell Cinema will include three new films and two classics that reflect the breadth and diversity of filmmaking practices across Latin America.

The festival kicks off with two classic films — Buena Vista Social Club (1999) and a 4K restoration of Margot Benacerraf's Araya (1959)  — then travels to Mexico with filmmaker Lila Avilés' emotionally expansive family drama Tótem (2023); to the Paraguayan Chaco with Eami (2022), a magic-realist film by Paraguayan director Paz Encina; and finally, to the urban landscape of Recife, the Brazilian coastal capital of Pernambuco, with Pictures of Ghosts (2023), Brazilian director Kleber Mendonça Filho's love letter to the city's classic movie palaces from the 20th century.

Cosponsored by the Department of Romance Studies.
