A Packed Week Heading into Halloween

Leaves are on the ground, the air is cooling, and we've entered the back half of the semester, which means it's almost time for Halloween!! We're celebrating early this weekend with THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (pictured)—screening Friday and Saturday, with a special party & costume contest on Saturday starting at 7:15pm! And if your Halloween taste runs a little kookier, join us Thursday for a screening of Nobuhiko Ôbayashi's indescribable 1977 movie HOUSE, featuring an introduction by Andrew Campana (Asian Studies).

Experimental animator Kelly Sears comes to town this Thursday with her program ALTERNATE HISTORIES.  Sears cuts up and collages imagery from American culture and politics to intervene with the history embedded in the frame. Working with appropriated images ranging from thrift store cast-offs to archival material, she uses animation to rebuild American histories that shift between the official and the uncanny while exploring contemporary narratives of power, such as manifest destiny, occupation and surveillance, and control of female bodies. She’ll present a program of ten short films.

Our Francophone film series continues with the Ithaca Premiere of MEMOIR OF WAR, an adaptation of Marguerite Duras’ autobiography La douleur, as well as Diane Kurys’ excellent 1977 coming-of-age film PEPPERMINT SODA. Our Cinematic Cities series continues Tuesday night with Fellini’s masterful LA DOLCE VITA

Our Human Flow series continues Wednesday with MIDNIGHT TRAVELER, a document of a family's 3-year, 3,500-mile journey from Afghanistan to Iran, Turkey, Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, and Hungary following a death threat from the Taliban. “This affecting, essential documentary, shot entirely on three phones by all four members of the Fazili family, charts a journey which spans several years and numerous dispiriting detention centers. But the suffering, fear and humiliation that they experience is balanced by moments of warmth and an artist’s magpie eye for unexpected glimpses of beauty. It’s a remarkable achievement.” (Screen Daily) We highly recommend!

And last but not least, the great Soviet epic WAR AND PEACE continues on Sunday with War and Peace: Chapter II, Natasha Rostova!
