Fellini, Sky Hopinka, Wong Kar Wai and more

The weather broke and it's starting to feel a bit like (dare we say it?) Spring! Don’t be discouraged by the cold nights, though—we’ve got plenty of great cinema to keep you company!

We’re opening three great films today, with tickets still available for each. Up first is Wong Kar Wai’s Fallen Angels. It’s a woozy, expressive trip through the neon-lit Hong Kong of the 90s, and this restoration is unlike any previous release of the film, screening in a widescreen 2.39:1 aspect ratio as Wong Kar Wai had originally wished for its release. From there, we have Three Summers, a Brazilian class comedy starring Regina Casé (The Second Mother) as a housekeeper for a sprawling vacation condo, now the sole inhabitant thanks to her boss’ corruption indictment. Finally, Sky Hopinka’s extraordinary poetic documentary maɬni–towards the ocean, towards the shore depicts indigenous life from an indigenous perspective, taking the Chinook Origin of Death myth as a lens through which to look at two Pacific Northwest residents. Be sure to check out the introduction to the film by Asst. Prof. Jeff Palmer (PMA) which further contextualizes the film.

RSVPs are now open for the following films: Wong Kar Wai’s Happy Together, Federico Fellini’s La Strada (pictured—and hey, 2021 is star Giulietta Masina’s 100th birth year!), and border documentary The River and The Wall. Be sure to register here for the panel discussion for The River and The Wall, happening Tuesday, March 23 at noon. The panel will feature Cornell alumna and ecologist Heather Mackey ’10, Debra Castillo (Hispanic Studies, Comp Lit), Sergio Garcia-Rios (Government, Latina/o Studies), and will be moderated by John W. Kennedy (PhD candidate, Romance Studies).

And finally, if you missed out on our wide-ranging discussion with John Gianvito (Her Socialist Smile) earlier this week, you can check it out here. Enjoy!
