Our Human Flow: Stories of Global Migration series continues this week with Wednesday's screening of SOUFRA (pictured), a new documentary about Mariam Shaar, a Palestinian who has spent her entire life in a refugee camp outside Beirut, as she attempts to start a catering company. Given the current state of the world, its a minor miracle that this is an inspirational story—come check it out!
On Thursday, the Cine con Cultura Film Festival continues with a visit by Cuban filmmaker Miguel Coyula with his new film NADIE. It's an imaginative documentary about Rafael Alcides, a chronicler of the Cuban revolution who is trying to save his unpublished novels before the ink literally fades from their pages. It should prove to be a fascinating discussion!
Thursday also brings the ramen western TAMPOPO, part of our Japanese cinema series. If you haven't seen TAMPOPO, do yourself a favor and watch it—it's one steamy bowl of soup!
Rounding out the week is Christian Petzold's recent film, TRANSIT, a modern-day adaptation of Anna Seghers' 1942 novel Transit Visa, about a German refugee who assumes the identity of a dead man to escape. We're also screening the indigenous drama ÁGA, Bulgaria's Oscar submission for Best Foreign Language Film, about a Siberian couple's attempts to reconnect with their estranged daughter. And last but not least: TOY STORY 4! All hail Forky!
