A Thousand and One

A Thousand and One follows unapologetic and free-spirited Inez (Teyana Taylor), who kidnaps her six-year-old son Terry from the foster care system after being released from prison. Holding onto their secret and each other, mother and son set out to reclaim their sense of home, identity, and stability, in a rapidly changing New York City.

An intimate, deeply human story of self discovery and everyday struggles, A.V. Rockwell’s debut feature also captures the vibrant character of 1990’s Harlem. Rather than projecting nostalgia for a grittier New York, A Thousand and One questions the forces behind and consequences of gentrification, playing with color, light, and texture to capture the changes taking place around Inez, Terry, and their community.
