Sinners
“You keep dancing with the devil, one day he’s gonna follow you home.”
From acclaimed director Ryan Coogler (Black Panther, Creed) comes a new vision of fear. Sinners stars Academy Award-winning actor Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as Smoke and Stack, twin brothers trying to leave behind their troubled lives in the North.
Having made a small fortune bootlegging and robbing gangsters in Chicago, the brothers return to their hometown in the Mississippi Delta to realize their dream of opening a music club called Club Juke. They rent an old sawmill rented from a threatening white landlord and begin recruiting old friends — including their aspiring musician cousin Sammie (Miles Caton) and aging alcoholic bluesman Delta Slim (Delroy Lindo) — to help with preparations for their opening night.
The brothers’ unceremonious return stirs tensions in the town and unearths skeletons from the lives they left behind, most especially with their estranged lovers Mary (Hailee Steinfeld) and Annie (Wunmi Mosaku). But when a strange, uninvited trio of Irish singers arrives, the brothers and their friends must band together to fight off an unimaginable evil…
Sinners is at once a powerful celebration of Black culture and a chilling allegory of race relations in the American South. Coogler’s inventive take on the Southern Gothic genre broke the record with a total of 16 Academy Award nominations and won for Best Original Screenplay, Best Actor, Best Cinematography, and Best Original Score.
