‘The Velvet Underground’ with Guests, 3-D Hitchcock, Kiarostami Films

Did you know that the largest archive of Velvet Underground material owned by an institution is housed right here at Cornell? Cornell Cinema is thrilled to have an excuse to talk about it with the Ithaca Premiere of Todd Haynes’ new documentary The Velvet Underground, opening this Friday!

As an extra-special treat, we’ve lined up an opening-night discussion between Judith Peraino (Music) and Sylvia Reed, Lou Reed’s second wife and collaborator during a particularly prolific part of Lou’s life! To accommodate this rare chance, we’re shifting the start time for The Velvet Underground to 6:45pm on Friday (and starting that evening’s Dial M for Murder show—in fabulous 3D—back to 9:45pm). The Velvet Underground will play two more times next week, with Judith Peraino speaking again next Tuesday, specifically about the Cornell Velvet Underground collection.

But before we get there, we’ve got a whole week’s worth of films to show you! This Wednesday, we’re hosting an Abbas Kiarostami double-feature: buy a ticket to Where is the Friend’s House? and get into Close-Up for free!

The following night, we welcome filmmaker Ephraim Asili for a screening of his debut feature The Inheritance (pictured). Based partly on Asili’s own experiences in a Black liberationist group, The Inheritance is an astonishing ensemble work about a community of young, Black artists and activists who form a collective, set almost entirely inside the West Philadelphia house they now call home. Samantha Sheppard (PMA) will moderate a post-screening Q&A with Ephraim Asili on Thursday. The film plays again on Sunday.

We’re also screening Alfred Hitchcock’s 3D masterpiece Dial M for Murder on Friday and Saturday! As mentioned above, the Friday screening time has slightly changed (to 9:45pm). We’re excited to break out the 3D glasses again—it’s been almost two years!! Also screening this weekend is David Lowery’s excellent Arthurian adaptation The Green Knight, showing Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday.
