Based on the 2014 novel by Martin Amis, Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest is a chilling historical drama focused on the commandant of Auschwitz, Rudolf Höss, and his wife Hedwig, who strive to build a dream life for their family in a house and garden adjacent to the concentration camp.

As the couple and their five children frolic in and tend to their luxurious house and gardens, seemingly oblivious to the extermination campaign being carried out nearby, Glazer’s film becomes a monstrously mundane account of ordinary people complicit in horrific crimes. The concentration camp remains unseen on screen, but traces emerge — most notably through the film’s unsettling soundscape, designed by Johnnie Burn.

2024 Oscar Winner for Best International Feature Film.  Winner of the Grand Prix at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
