The Women’s Adventure Film Tour (WAFT) presents a thrilling selection of films that span extreme sports, personal journeys, and boundary-pushing storytelling from across the globe. This year’s program highlights the resilience and creativity of individuals navigating the challenges of both the outer world and their own inner landscapes.
For the first time ever, Cornell Outdoor Education is thrilled to present a program that brings together incredible stories of courage, adventure, and self-discovery. These films represent the spirit of perseverance and the power of women in the outdoors to inspire, entertain, and spark important conversations.
This year’s lineup includes a diverse range of films that explore the physical, emotional, and personal journeys of athletes and adventurers:
Drawn In by Jessa Gilbert and Justin Taylor Smith
Drawn In tells the story of Jessa Gilbert, a backcountry guide and visual artist, whose creative process intertwines the exploration of glaciated terrain with the art of painting, revealing the shared spirit of adventure and creativity in both pursuits. Runtime: 7:30
Carved from Stone by Tyler Burr
Brooke Carten has been rock climbing for long enough that it’s hard to imagine who she’d be if it weren’t for climbing’s influence on her life… But in what ways has this sport influenced her? What are the pieces of Brooke’s personality that have been carved from the stone?
Above Sinai by Kylie Zarmati
Follow along as we meet Sarah Sadek, Egyptian native and professional kiteboarder, at her home on the Sinai peninsula. In a world where women are not often found in athletic roles, nor in the water, Sarah shows us how she is opening the eyes of her local community and pushing the boundaries in a gracious yet badass way (and yes, the two go hand in hand!). Runtime: 13:00
Wild Aerial
Wild Aerial follows adventure aerialist Sasha Galitzki to dramatic ice-bound locations in Jasper and Banff National Parks as she overcomes extreme cold and dizzying heights to perform aerial, connect with nature, and draw attention to the beauty and fragility of Canada’s rapidly changing mountain landscapes. Runtime: 16:00
N.G.R: The Fabulous Life of Nancy Greene Raine
N.G.R. has spent a lifetime showing the world what it means to love a sport. As a ski racer, coach, Olympic champ, mountain-resort visionary and Canadian Senator, Nancy Greene Raine is an inter-generational household name for many Canadians. But how much do you really know about Sun Peaks’ local celebrity? Runtime: 10:00
15-minute Intermission featuring Teen Treks, NOLS, Primitive Pursuits, Girl Scouts, North Ferry Hats, Cornell Outing Club, Cycle CNY, Ciclismo Classico and Bike Walk Tompkins
Forward
While navigating a myriad number of life challenges from being her mom’s caretaker, working several jobs, to facing housing insecurity, Anjelica Avella turned to the outdoors in her mid-twenties to improve her mental health. Despite feeling the benefits of time spent outside for her well-being, the lack of other plus-size women of color she was encountering on trail was noticeable. In an effort to form a community, Anjelica began leading weekend hikes and trips for other women who too were seeking others with shared lived experiences. Forward chronicles Anjelica’s perspective in a space that has historically excluded individuals like her and shares a profound connection between women who once felt sidelined and are now a catalyst for change. Runtime: 16:00
Cycling the World by Mackenzie Barney
Cycling The World tells the story of one woman’s multi-year journey to see the world by bicycle. Through five continents, 28 countries and 29,000 kilometers by way of Africa, South America, Europe, Southeast Asia, New Zealand and Australia, she encounters as much of an exploration of the outer world as her inner landscape. Run time 33:00
Ladies Behind the Lens by Floraine Caillot
After an evening watching adventure documentaries and not seeing many women’s names in the credits, Hannah Marshall began a mission to get more ladies behind the lens in the adventure, ski and snowboard filmmaking industry within Aotearoa. Run time 13:30
WAFT is committed to celebrating diverse voices and innovative storytelling. This year’s selections showcase not only groundbreaking sports films but also powerful narratives that highlight women in adventure, athletes challenging societal expectations, and the transformative power of travel and exploration.
