Dive into the eerie and fantastical romance from Germany’s preeminent filmmaker, Christian Petzold.

Upon learning that his lover has been cheating, Undine responds with not a threat, but a statement: “If you leave me, I’ll have to kill you.”

In European folklore, Undines are water nymphs that can live as humans if they fall in love with a man (think The Little Mermaid) but must kill that man if he is deceitful. Further complicating the matter, she quickly falls in love with a charismatic (and poetically fitting) diving mechanic (Franz Rogowski).

Undine is a noirish foray into magic realism, based on the European myth. “Petzold imbues the material with a Hitchcockian build, as subtle moments drop hints of dark, invisible forces conspiring to complicate the situation” (IndieWire)

In German, English & Spanish.
