The legendary Judy Garland delivers a powerhouse performance in George Cukor’s acclaimed musical tragedy about the volatile relationship between an aging, alcoholic actor and a young star on the rise. After Esther (Judy Garland) saves Norman (James Mason) from on-stage embarrassment, Norman pursues the young starlet. His affections, connections, and encouragement giving her new confidence pursue a career as an actress and singer, but Norman is driven ever deeper into despair as Esther’s star continues to rise and his own career crumbles.

Although it didn't win any of its seven Academy Award nominations, Garland and Mason did win Golden Globes for their performances. Added to the National Film Registry in 2000.
