Novice nun Maria convent becomes governess to the seven children of the widower Captain Von Trapp in 1930s Austria. She relieves the children’s gloom and his, and they eventually marry. Meanwhile the Nazis annex Austria in the Anschluss and the Trapp family must flee.

The melodrama recedes in this juggernaut of a film, with its gorgeous location shots and shimmering acting — especially the bewitching chemistry of Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. The film features a top-notch score from Rodgers and Hammerstein and would be their last collaboration, as Hammerstein died before the film started production. Songs include the title song, “Do Re Mi,” “My Favorite Things,” “Edelweiss,” and “Climb Every Mountain.” Capturing five Academy Awards, the film dominated the 1965 box office, and this perennial favorite still rates the third highest grossing film after adjusting for inflation.
