Matter Out of Place
Over four years and several continents, filmmaker Nikolaus Geyrhalter (Homo Sapiens, 2016) followed the track of garbage (in cities, on shores, on mountains, in oceans), its collection, its transport and its disposal—often to remote corners of the planet. His modus operandi is to use a fixed camera, and to let scenes play out in long sequences in real time, a pile up of images without narration, a hypnotic journey that becomes a searing indictment of human waste and our ability to hide and off-load our rubbish.
