Both Sides of the Blade
Sara (Juliette Binoche) and Jean’s (Vincent Lindon) idyllic life is ruptured by the re-appearance of her ex-lover and Jean’s old friend, François (Grégoire Colin) in this steamy, melancholic melodrama from the great Claire Denis, re-teaming with co-writer Christine Angot (Let the Sunshine In) and the incandescent Binoche.
Variety calls it “a love triangle of unusually elegant geometry, with multiple romantic histories and phantom futures to be formed from its fragments… Denis’ latest sees her applying her usual rigorous form and psychological curiosity to material that tends to inspire more generic directorial treatment, teasing out a rich, nuanced exploration of female desire from the fault lines of an ostensibly simple narrative.”
“The sense of love dissolving and lives thrown into chaos as a dormant past violently breaks through the surface is unexpectedly moving, all the more so because of the film’s rigorous rejection of sentimentality.” (The Hollywood Reporter)
Featuring a lush score by Tindersticks. Winner of Berlin’s Silver Bear for Best Director.
