The Birdcage

Two men wearing pastel striped pajamas laugh together in a room with polka dot walls.

Longtime lovers Armand (Robin Williams) and Albert (Nathan Lane) have built the perfect life for themselves tending to their glamorous Miami nightclub. When Armand's son announces that he's getting married to the daughter of ultra-conservative Senator Keeley, and that they're all getting together for dinner, Armand and Albert feel compelled to pass themselves off as a "normal" family. But it will take the performance of their lives for the gay cabaret owner and his drag queen companion to transform themselves into "Mr. and Mrs. Family Values" just in time.

This American remake — based on the French play La Cage Aux Folles and its 1978 film adaptation — was directed by Mike Nichols, alongside a screenplay adapted by his comedic partner-in-crime Elaine May. Featuring brilliant performances from Nathan Lane, Robin Williams, and Gene Hackman, the joyous film was a critical and commercial success, and has been embraced as an enduring classic in the queer comedy genre.
