Contempt

Martin Scorsese’s favorite Godard film and a magnificent parable on culture and filmmaking in post-WWII Europe. A writer (Michel Piccoli) finds himself beset by doubts and conflicting loyalties when he’s hired by a boorish American producer (Jack Palance, perfect) to script-doctor a film of The Odyssey directed by Fritz Lang.

In addition to exploring issues of Hollywood domination and artistic integrity, Godard paints a picture of marital life every bit as poignant as the Odysseus-Penelope relationship in Homer, with Brigitte Bardot in a distinguished performance as the writer’s wife. Contempt also features stunning interior and exterior views of the island of Capri’s legendary architectural landmark, Casa Malaparte.
