In this striking, debut feature from Scottish director Charlotte Wells, 11-year-old Sophie (Frankie Corio) treasures spending time with her loving but elusive father (Paul Mescal) at a sun-soaked holiday resort. Reflecting on their relationship twenty years later, Sophie’s tender memories of their last holiday serve as an emotionally gripping portrait of a father-daughter relationship.

Inspired by her own childhood experience, Wells’ poignant film celebrates cinema’s ability to convey the warmth of memory and to reveal life’s underlying sorrow. The Guardian compares the memorial textures of the film to Lynne Ramsay’s Ratcatcher (1999) for showcasing “a Proustian talent for transporting the audience back into a world they didn’t actually experience, while making them feel like they did.”

Aftersun is the winner of 16 British Independent Film Awards, including Best Film and Best Director, and was named the Best Film of 2022 by The Guardian. Part of our New Visions, New Voices series.
