Cornell Cinema collaborates once again with Ithaca’s Cine con Cultura Film Festival, an annual event that brings Latin American and Latinx films to the Ithaca area to commemorate National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15–October 15). The Festival is organized by Cultura Ithaca!, Ithaca College and Cornell's Latina/o Studies Program, and hosts screenings presented by Cinemapolis, Ithaca College, and Cornell Cinema.

We begin with Dos Estaciones, a Mexican film about the owner of the last Mexican-owned tequila factory in Jalisco. Winner of a Special Jury Award for Acting (Teresa Sánchez) at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, this powerful film follows fifty-year-old businesswoman María García (Sánchez) as she struggles to keep her once-majestic tequila factory operating in the face of climate change and competition from multinational corporations.

Director Justin Lerner ’02 will join us remotely for a post-screening discussion following a screening of his latest film Cadejo Blanco. Winner of 3 ÍCARO awards including Best Cinematography, Cadejo Blanco follows the story of Sarita, a young woman on a desperate search for her sister who disappeared during a night out in Guatemala City. Screen Daily calls it “a nail-biting, evocative and utterly persuasive crime drama that is very much a part of the country’s burgeoning film output.”

Later that week, Colombian filmmaker Camilo Restrepo’s debut feature Los Conductos screens at Cornell Cinema. Winner of the Best First Feature prize at the 2020 Berlin Film Festival, Los Conductos is a “collage-like tale of vengeance told with an often impressionistic elusiveness…” (Slant) about an outlaw at large, on the run from a mysterious religious sect.

Finally, filmmaker Marcela Arteaga visits Cornell Cinema on October 4 for a free screening of her documentary The Guardian of Memory, about the Juarez Valley, the tragedies that have taken place there, and the Mexicans seeking to escape its violence. Marcela Arteaga’s visit is sponsored by the Latin American and Caribbean Studies and will feature a panel discussion with Arteaga, moderated by Cecelia Lawless (Romance Studies).
