Bogie won his only Oscar as Charlie Allnutt, a scruffy steamboat cap’n who has to whisk a prim missionary (Hepburn) up the Congo River in the early days of World War I before the Germans catch up with them. The pair’s adventures, from dodging artillery to fending off leeches, are almost as thrilling as the comic banter and frisky romantic chemistry.
