- Luis Buñuel
- Catherine Deneuve, Fernando de Rey
Tristana is a somber, disturbing drama of willful perversity in which a young Spanish woman (Deneuve) outlives the guardian who seduced her. Deneuve transfixes the camera throughout, her unsettlingly angelic mask conveying a chilling lucidity; and it is impossible to look at Don Lope, the guardian, without thinking of Buñuel himself, a creature of conflicting obsessions, reveries, and hallucinations. A dark comedy, the film is inextricably rooted in the Spanish culture of the late 60s and early 70s.
