That Man From Rio
Philippe de Broca
Jean-Paul Belmondo, Françoise Dorléac, Jean Servais

That Man from Rio stars the legendary Jean-Paul Belmondo, an Army private spending a week’s leave in pursuit of his abducted girlfriend, played by Françoise Dorléac. The film navigates between comedy, romance, and adventure; spoofs the spy movie style promulgated by the Bond movies; and takes place in Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, and Paris. The film was nominated for the Best Writing, Story and Screenplay (directly for the screen) Oscar at the 37th Academy Awards. In his 1964 NY Times review, Bosley Crowther had this to say about de Broca’s work: “He bubbles with improvisations of crises that tangle fun and thrills, and he sparks with cliff-hanging situations that have to be seen to be disbelieved. But he does more than imitate the masters and make sport with melodramatic japes. He mingles the real and the fantastic for a most beguiling exaltation of the absurd.” “A crazy delight! A stylish, early 60s pastiche in vibrant, widescreen color!” (Village Voice)
