The Tale of the Princess Kaguya
Isao Takahata

A tiny princess, the size of a finger, is found amongst some bamboo. As the teensy Princess Kaguya grows older, larger, and wiser, she meets many suitors, including the Emperor of Japan. As enchanting as she is, though, she, and her adoptive parents, must face her destiny as woman, but also as an object of obsession. Japan’s most famous folktale gets the royal treatment in this hand-drawn masterwork from Studio Ghibli cofounder Isao Takahata. Fans of Takahata’s last film — The Grave of the Fireflies — will know to steel themselves for some emotional jabs and incisions (however subtle), and Kaguya does not pull its punches. “Arriving as the best animated film of the year, but destined to be remembered as one of Studio Ghibli’s finest achievements, Takahata’s first feature in 15 years delivers an emotional wallop.” (The A.V. Club)
