Pelican Dreams
Judy Irving
From Judy Irving, the maker of The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill, this film (much like her first) examines the life of a specific avian species in contemporary, urban environments. As opposed to sweet and colorful subjects (the parrots and their caretaker), here she looks at brown pelicans—gangly, large, and prehistoric—as a case study of how one fascinating species has been forced to interact with, and adapt to the modern world. Irving’s portrait of the pelicans—one, Gigi, in particular—is moving as we see how a species that is not accustomed to the limelight, grow and take wing into being a star.
