Isabelle Huppert, Kwon Hye Hyo, Jung Yu Mi

Cult Korean writer-director Hong Sang-soo returns with a triptych of delightful vignettes is his latest comic masterpiece. At its center is the peerless Isabelle Huppert as Anne, a French tourist on holiday at a modest seaside resort. The combination makes for a unique and breezy sort of filmmaking that is sure to please devotees of both French and Korean cinema. This festival hit plays the metaphysical card as its episodic structures follow the daydreams of a bored young film student, whose scripts become realized before our eyes. Hong’s blend of realism and contrivance plays lightly but effectively as Anne flits through her allotted roles. His trademark style works in service of the characters, allowing their depth to emphasize the comedic elements at hand. “Shot on 35mm, it has a likeably freewheeling, thrown-together, lo-fi feel—even the opening titles are written in biro—with a zoom-happy camera that often seems powered by sheer joie de vivre.” (Hollywood Reporter)
