with post-screening discussion led by Wendy Wolford, Vice Provost for International Affairs

Fellipe Barbosa
João Pedro Zappa, Caroline Abras

In this travelogue drama based on the true story of a friend of director Fellipe Barbosa, Gabriel (João Pedro Zappa), a Brazilian student, decides to travel through Africa on a year-long backpacking trip before beginning his graduate studies at UCLA. An idealistic, naive adventurer, Gabriel struggles with his identity in Africa as a white outsider, squabbles with his girlfriend, and joyfully seeks out new experiences. But he never makes it past Malawi’s Mount Mulanje. Beginning at the end, Gabriel and the Mountain retraces the last few months of Gabriel’s journey, in a full, loving, and complicated portrait of a lost friend, made vibrant by Zappa’s impressive performance. “A remarkable and full-throated elegy, a work of art that is full of life.” (NY Times) Filmed in Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia and Malawi. In Portuguese, Swahili, English, French.
