The Big Sick
Michael Showalter
Zoe Kazan, Kumail Nanjiani, Holly Hunter, Ray Romano

This romantic comedy stars Kumail Nanjiani of Silicon Valley as a fictionalized version of himself, a Pakistani-American stand-up comedian who falls for a white woman, Emily, played by Zoe Kazan, against his parents’ wishes. Just when Kumail decides to end it to please his parents, Emily falls ill and ends up in a coma. With the help of Emily’s parents, played by Holly Hunter and Ray Romano, whom he has only just met, Kumail must sort out his complicated relationship with Emily in the midst of her illness and the cultural clash between their two families. Written by Nanjiani and his real-life wife Emily V. Gordon and directed by Michael Showalter of Wet Hot American Summer. “It’s an exceedingly high degree of difficulty to hit the perfect chord of humor and heart, plucking the heartstrings just so, blending laughter and tears, and The Big Sick strums them just right.” (Tribune News Service)
