When two young hipsters meet, hit it off, and go home together one night, it begins a tentative romance that is played out over a day-long odyssey in San Francisco. Micah and Jo’ are African-American, a fact that is central to their relationship with each other but also to their fraught connection to their beloved, if largely Caucasian, city. There are frank discussions and confrontations of issues of class, race, and identity, and the political and romantic tension between the two makes for a vibrant, complex, and highly original film. An exciting debut from 29-year-old Barry Jenkins (Moonlight), Medicine is “tender, smart, soulful.” (Village Voice) Nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards, the film also features a great look and a fabulous soundtrack.
