It’s time for Cornell Cinema’s Third Annual Elegant Winter Party, which has become a must-attend event on the social calendars of all cinema-loving Ithacans. Dress up in your winter best (1920s & 30s attire is absolutely encouraged) and join us for scrumptious hors d’oeuvres & desserts (courtesy of some of Ithaca’s finest dining and catering establishments, including Just a Taste, Olivia's, Moosewood, Greenstar, Word of Mouth, and more! ), a cash bar, live music, drawings for an array of wonderful door prizes (including restaurant gift certificates to Maxie's, Dijon and Watercress; tickets to the Kitchen and Hangar Theatres; Cornell Store gift cards; local wine from Treleaven and Hazlett; and more!) and a 9pm screening of the 1934 classic The Thin Man, all in the always elegant Willard Straight Theatre.
The Thin Man, based on the detective novel by Dashiell Hammett, is far from a hardboiled thriller and more a cocktail comedy featuring the ultra sophisticated banter between William Powell and Myrna Loy as Nick and Nora Charles (and don’t forget their little dog, Asta!). “They live an eternal cocktail hour, bewailing hangovers that only another little drink will cure, in a marvelous blend of marital familiarity and constant courtship, pixilated fantasy and childlike wonder.” (Time Out Film Guide)
Could there be a better way to greet the upcoming Valentine’s Day holiday, beat the winter blues, help out your favorite repertory cinema and have a fabulous evening—all at the same time—than attending our Elegant Winter Party? We don’t think so! Proceeds from this event will help Cornell Cinema continue to provide its eclectic slate of cinematic offerings from around the world. Tickets are $40 general and $15 for students, and will be available starting Monday, Jan 29 from 104 Willard Straight Hall or by calling 255-3522.
