The Steampunk Aesthetic

By popular request, Cornell Cinema has rounded up some steampunk and steampunk-adjacent films for patrons’ viewing pleasure, including Jules Vernes’ 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Terry Gilliam’s dystopic masterpiece Brazil, Hayao Miyazaki’s Howl’s Moving Castle and two films by Jean-Pierre Jeunet and Mark Caro: The City of Lost Children and Delicatessen, the latter being shown in a new digital restoration. Typically defined by a post-apocalyptic, neo-Victorian aesthetic with a retro-futurist usage of technological steam power, steampunk has made its mark on contemporary science-fiction, and patrons can savor its funky look all semester long!
