Deux au Denis

Claire Denis is one of the most visionary filmmakers of the past quarter century and Cornell Cinema is thrilled to present both her feature debut, Chocolat, based on her childhood in colonial Cameroon, and what is widely considered her masterpiece, Beau Travail, a retelling of Melville’s Billy Budd, The Sailor, set in the African desert, in 35mm film prints. “Denis has steered storytelling into increasingly more abstract, dreamlike, and elliptical realms. Hers has been a sustained… effort to explore the tensions between the tenuous interior states of her characters and the sensual external world that encloses and often overwhelms them.” (Gavin Smith, Film Comment)
