Contemporary World Cinema

Five stellar recent foreign language films: Miyazaki's latest (and perhaps last) feature, The Wind Rises; 2013 Cannes Film Festival Camera d'Or winner for Best First Feature, Ilo Ilo, with a post-screening Q & A via Skype with Singaporean filmmaker Anthony Chen; the stunning Czech historical drama, Burning Bush, by Agnieszka Holland; a lovely interpretation of Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, Viola, which will be presented in-person by Argentine filmmaker Matías Piñeiro; and one of this summer's most acclaimed art house films, Ida, about a young Polish nun dealing with the darker side of her ancestry, by accomplished Polish filmmaker Pawel Pawlikowski. Burning Bush and Ida are cosponsored with the Cornell Institute for European Studies.
