In honor of the 50th anniversary of the founding of Cornell's Department of Computer Science, Cornell Cinema presents this timely series, proposed by the department “to shed light on the public's perception of our field. Movies with a robotic theme are an excellent vehicle for doing this because robots are a metaphor for how society thinks about computers.” Five of the films will be introduced by professors from the department: Prof. Charles Van Loan will introduce The Day the Earth Stood Still; Prof. Walker White will introduce Robocop (on Oct 2) and Ghost in the Shell (on Oct 17); Prof. Ross Knepper will introduce Metropolis (on Nov 7); and Prof. Ashutosh Saxena will introduce Robot & Frank. Cosponsored with the Dept. of Computer Science.
