The Great Northwest

films in series

Landscape and cinema have been inextricably linked since the earliest days of film, but it wasn’t until the mid 20th century that filmmakers began to focus on landscape as a jumping off point for explorations of history, memory, trauma, rebirth, world cultures, environmental evolution, national identity and humankind’s place in nature. This series features six recent films whose filmmakers have mined the rich terrain of landscape to offer thoughtful meditations on a wide variety of contemporary issues and ideas.
