Cinema Tropical is a
New York City based non-profit organization that promotes, programs and distributes
Latin American cinema in the United States. One of its programs is the Cinema
Tropical monthly touring series, wherein a recent Latin American
film
makes the rounds of over a dozen prominent film centers throughout the States.
Cornell Cinema is a participating venue and in March we will premiere Natalia
Almada’s Al Otro Lado (Mexico, 2005). From Sinaloa, Mexico,
to the streets of South Central and East L.A., Al Otro Lado
explores the world of drug smuggling, illegal immigration and the corrido music
that chronicles it all, featuring interviews and music from the most famous
corrido musicians, including Grammy winners Los Tigres del Norte; the
late corrido legend Chalino Sanchez; the first lady of the corrido, Jenni Rivera;
and Jesse Morales, El Original de La Sierra. Shown with the short film
Matapajaros (Birdkillers) (Mexico, 19 min,
2005) by Kyzza Terrazas. Cinema Tropical screenings are cosponsored with LASP,
CUSLAR and the Einaudi Center.
