Mighty Heart

directed by Michael Winterbottom

with Angelina Jolie, Dan Futterman, Archie Panjabi

We watch with our hearts in our throats as Mariane Pearl and a select group of Americans and Pakistanis watch, wait, follow some leads, and wait some more in the weeks following Daniel Pearl's kidnapping in Pakistan in 2002. Winterbottom's near-documentary style provides a sense of pared-down immediacy that is striking in this era of Hollywood-ized biopics; this is an earnest film that tells the Pearls' story in a dignified manner. It is the rarefied story of a tragic, untimely death and at the same time an angry, unflinching look at our own impotence in the face of the tremendous hatred that fuels the conflict with and within the Middle East.
