Drawing
on her life as the daughter of an early chemical farmer and the
story of Fred Kirschenmann, a pioneering organic farmer, filmmaker
Miranda Smith has created an incisive and emotionally charged
film about the use and misuse of technology on the American farm.
Kirschenmann is a former university professor who returned to
his family farm in North Dakota to help make the transition from
chemical to organic farming. When he learned the extent of the
damage caused by chemical farming, he became a leader in the
organic farming movement. By interspersing Kirschenmann's story
with her memories of her father's enthusiasm for chemical farming's
promises of riches and plenty on their family orange farm in
Florida, Smith paints a vivid and sometimes devastating portrait
of the conflicts and questions raised by modern food production.
