West Africa's transition zone is one
of the world's most ecologically fragile areas and is widely
assumed to be experiencing a deforestation crisis. Experts hold
villagers responsible, yet none have undertaken the historical
research to prove unequivocally that farming is at fault. Now,
British and Guinean social anthropologists have carried out detailed
research in Guinea's Kissidougou prefecture -- and their findings
are remarkable. Instead of disappearing, the forest is in fact
on the increase, due to the farmer's skill in transforming savanna
into forest. Directed by Melissa Leach and James Fairhead. 1996,
40 min.
