Controversy surrounds the construction of the massive Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze River in the heart of China. The Chinese government promises it will bring economic growth and insists it is a much needed source of energy. But are the human and environmental costs too high? Nearly two million people will be forced to abandon their homes and temples in the largest peacetime evacuation in history, and over one thousand sites of archeological and historical importance will be submerged and lost forever. Many species of wildlife, already precariously holding on to their survival, will find their habitats destroyed. As controversy rages, Great Wall Across the Yangtze tells a contemporary tale of sacrifice in the face of modernization. Narrated by Martin Sheen. Directed by Ellen Perry. 2000, USA, 56 min.

Cosponsored with the East Asia Program and International Studies in Planning.
