In a rather unusual form, where animations of crawling and mating corncobs alternate with poetic nature scenes, Hybrid tells the story of an extraordinary life, dedicated to corn. Milford Beeghly began his seed company in the 1930's, experimenting with hybrid corn in secret and peddling it on the road to skeptical farmers at a time when intervening in the natural process was thought of by some as an oddity, hoax or sin. A magnificent meditation on the Midwest, Hybrid delves deep into one family's complex relationships with an eccentric, alienated man who doesn't know how to communicate with his family, but finds complete solace in Iowa's rustling cornfields. Winner, Grand Jury Prize, Slamdance Film Festival; winner, Best Documentary, South by Southwest Film Festival. Directed by Montieth McCollum. 2000, USA, 93 min.

Cosponsored with the Department of Cinema and Photography; Cinema on the Edge; and the Environmental Studies Program, Ithaca College
