Endurance: Shackleton's Antartic Expedition 7:15pm, Saturday, October 13 Willard Straight Theatre, Cornell University |
In
1914, Earnest Shackelton famously published a call for shipmates:
"Men Wanted for Hazardous Journey, Small Wages, Bitter Cold,
Long Months of Complete Darkness, Constant Danger, Safe Return
Doubtful, Honor and Recognition in Case of Success." Little
did he realize the truth of his ad. The classic story of man
versus an angry environment, and one of the greatest true-life
survival stories of the twentieth century, Endurance documents
Shackelton's doomed Antarctic expedition and the pained months
following the destruction of his ship in the ice. His brave leadership
and drive to save all 27 members of his crew led him on a fascinating
odyssey and marked his place in the history books forever. Filmmaker
George Butler centers the film around the amazing archival film
and photographs saved by the ship's documentarian Frank Hurley,
and goes beyond, with recreations and beautiful new footage shot
at many of the same locations. Directed by George Butler. 2000,
USA, 100 min. |
