It is hard to believe, but there was a time when nuclear
bombs were going to help and not destroy civilization. Nuclear
Dynamite looks back on that peculiar era when Project Plowshare
(and it's Russian equivalent) worked to reshape the earth for
our own good. It was called "Global Engineering:" new
harbors, canals, even interplanetary rocket ships were thought
possible. For better or worse, public and scientific opposition
would eventually build to upset the dreams of nuclear scientists
and give rise to the anti-nukes movement of the 70s. As the first
ever documentary about "peaceful nuclear explosions,"
Nuclear Dynamite utilizes newly declassified footage to
show nuclear capabilities and concerns never before addressed
in a film. Written and directed by Gary Marcuse. 2000, Canada,
72 min.
Cosponsored with the Center for Religion, Ethics and
Social Policy.
