Set against Tibet's pastoral landscapes, Daughters at first seems like a beautifully shot portrait of a curiosity: an entire Buddhist nunnery in a country where almsot all devotees are monks. However, the wry observations of its subjects gently reveal their chosen path as a sort of feminism in a poverty-wracked society where wives do much of the hard labor. Shirking rural suffering in favor of spiritual awakening, these 300 initiates at Tibet's Kala Rongo monastery—the first Buddhist temple to train women as nuns—undertake a regimen of self-discipline that's impressive to behold. Beautiful soundtrack features Tibetan folksinging. more at daughtersofwisdom.com Video projection.
