Wondrous Oblivion

directed by Paul Morrison

with Sam Smith, Delroy Lindo, Emily Woof

The Wisemans are the only Jewish family in their 1960's South London working class neighborhood, a point often made by their blue-eyed neighbors. They lead a quiet life: Mom Ruth tends the house while Dad Victor spends long days at his drapes shop; 11-year-old David spends his days dreaming of playing cricket, although his skill level gets him picked last, and there is little chance of him getting in front of the wicket. When a Jamaican family moves next door, they are initially shunned, but after they put in a cricket pitch David happily befriends kindly Dennis and his young daughter, Judy. With his new teacher, David's cricket skills improve, as the neighbors watch warily. Scandal grows as Ruth and Dennis develop a friendship, and the racial tension in the neighborhood begins to erupt. "A knowing fairy tale that lovingly re-creates a bygone era but also examines its underlying moral ambiguities." (Washington Post) more at www.palmpictures.com/film/wondrous_oblivion.php
