a lecture and screening by author John Loomis
John Loomis's book, Revolution of Forms: Cuba's Forgotten Art Schools, and Humberto Solas's film, Variaciones, document the brick and terra-cotta Catalan vaulted structures that were to serve as art schools soon after the Cuban Revolution, but went abandoned to the jungles outside of Havana. Loomis unearths the buildings, as well as the social and political implications of both their construction and their "disappearance." In addition to the slides accompanying Loomis's lecture, a rare archival video of Variaciones (1961, 14 mins) will be shown, the only copy of this poetic essay on the construction of the art schools.
