The first foray into computer animation by the folks at Britain's Aardman Animation (their claymation wonders include Chicken Run and Wallace & Gromit) is a magnificent adventure in the sewers of London, where the rats have created a ratopolis and an evil toad is bent on destroying the city. When a pampered pet rat (Jackman) is accidentally flushed into this underworld, he finds adventure and more with a tough-as-nails adventuress (Winslet) who captains a boat that might get him home. "The film is filled with celebrity voices...all are swell, but the pleasure they afford comes not so much from their mere presence—as in Hollywood's animated films—as from the ceaselessly witty script, which sends up the English class system, the World Cup, French insouciance, action movie cliches and more with a happy, slapdash abandon set to a lively score crooned by a gaggle of slugs who serve as a Greek chorus."
