Los Zafiros:
Music from the Edge of Time

directed by Lorenzo DeStefano

Los Zafiros: Music from the Edge of Time chronicles the history and music of Los Zafiros (The Sapphires), the Beatles of 1960s Cuba. Though they enjoyed international acclaim, touring widely throughout Europe, the group remained in relative obscurity in the U.S. as a result of the political climate. Their mix of American-inspired doo-wop touched by Afro-Cuban rhythms, Salsa, Son and other traditional Latin forms can best be described as world music before there was world music. Thirty years after their breakup, the two surviving band members, Manuel Galban and Miguel Cancio, reunite in present-day Havana, a place of unforgettable songs and memories for them and for their still loyal fans. Family members, fellow artists and friends weigh in, creating a stirring and definitive portrait. Cosponsored with Cuba Friendship Group of Greater Ithaca. Beta SP video projection.
