In 1972, photographer Nicholas Vreeland, grandson of Vogue editor Diana Vreeland and one of Irving Penn’s mentees, left his life of privilege to join a monastery in India. For the next fourteen years he studied Buddhism, living simply, until fate called upon him to return to his photography and past connections to raise funds and save his monastery. This documentary traces Vreeland’s unique journey from playboy to monk to artist in its own unique fashion, combining current film footage with 70s-style animated segments recounting the photographer’s past, while questioning how such contrasting identities can coexist. “Monk With a Camera hints at answers, but imposes nothing. Like a good photograph, or a wise abbot, it only presents the evidence and allows us to arrive at truth.” (Village Voice)
